I am fascinated by doors. When traveling I look for them, marveling at the architecture, wondering about who lives there. I make up stories in my head of the conversations that have happened on the doorsteps. Yes – My mind is a bowl of creative minestrone soup some days.
Sometimes those doors open to wonderful things like a new friend, a business opportunity, a new skill. Sometimes the doors present terrifying options such as sickness, loss or other unexpected bumps in the road.
I believe that life is a series of doors much like the Choose Your Own Adventure storybooks from childhood. It is how you respond to them that matters. I do my best to approach doors with optimism and hope. I prefer those doors over the ones that are covered with stormy thunderclouds.
When you are presented with a door do you walk through it? Do you cling to constructs of what you think should be, so much that you refuse to see what could be? Yes – deep thoughts over a simple door.
How do you face your doors?
- Do you you refuse to look out to see what is beyond the door?
- Do you slam it closed out of fear or anger?
- Do you skip on through with appreciation and excitement?
- Do you get frustrated because the door you expected did not appear?
How do you choose when there are multiple doors at the same time? YES – sometimes it feels all too much, but each time you tackle a door you learn something. There are no wrong answers. There is not a right or wrong way to face a door.
Life will present you with so very many doors. Some are brimming with hope and optimism, some present challenges. Ultimately what will write the story of your life is how you approach the doors; the ones that you close, the ones you open and the ones you leave untouched.
