Happy Birthday Daddy {Orangeville Photographer}

August 12, 2011PhortonFamily1 Comment

When I’m all alone

In the rain or snow

I’ll remember you.

There’s some people that

you don’t forget

When the roses fade

And I’m in the shade

I’ll remember you.

(bob dylan)

Tomorrow, August 13,  is my dad’s birthday.  He died on August 23, 1993 but each year I still celebrate his life with a favourite chocolate cake (secret recipe to follow in another post 😉 and a glass of rye. (that is very important – not scotch ….. rye!)

Since I hit 40 I have been even more reflective on his role in my life.  He passed on just as I was beginning to see him through an adult’s eyes.  To recognize how very much he loved me, was proud of me and respected me.  This I carry every day.  I also carry his sense of humour, sense of integrity and stubbornness.  (The stubbornness is one of those positive/negative traits 😉  His most important trait was his dedication to service.  His funeral was one of the lowest and greatest learning experiences of my life.  The multitudes who came to pay their respects and make sure that we (his family) new the unselfish way that he had touched their lives.  I was OVERWHELMED.  I had always seen him as MY dad.  To hear over and over again how he helped so many others in big and small ways……that was quite a lesson.   One that I learned loud and clear – help people in any way you can.  It is not about you it is about them.  What a Gift!!!

I am extremely proud to be a Glassford.  Even more so to be Clark Glassford’s Daughter.  I see him in our everyday lives; laughing at the girls, smiling his beaming smile, dancing a jig when the piano is playing but most importantly being supportive as he always was.

I welcome you to join me in my celebration as I raise my glass and toast service, integrity, honour, laughter, music and most importantly – Joy.

Happy Birthday Daddy. xoxo
